The skirmish started in a nightclub on the fifth floor of the Carnival Magic ship at around 2 a.m. After the angry lovers confronted their respective partners for two-timing on the seven seas, according to James, a travel agent who watched the fracas from her room. Other passengers are also shown being engaged in the fight, which was eventually stopped by the ship's security team. The Daily Mail in the UK covered the cruise ship skirmish and included a TicTok video which showed the begining of the fight. The Sun newspaper included a video with a portion of the violent fight.

The NYPD told PIX 11 the cruise was escorted into New York for an emergency docking, but Carnival Cruise Line contends that the stop was already scheduled. “After that, a boarding team from USCG Sector New York assisted NYPD and (Customs and Border Protection) with crew processing,” the coast guard told People magazine. Another passenger supposedly on the ship commented, "All I know is, I was filling my cup up with lemonade then boom, they were knuckin' and buckin'... you just had to be there." The Coast Guard then escorted the ship into Pier 88 near West 48th Street in Manhattan, police said.

Jurisdictional questions prevented police from boarding the vessel, but the NYPD has opened an investigation.
